Hi all, I have never ever made a film. Ever. I was quite suprised when, the other day, I had an idea for a short film and now have a strong desire to create my vision. However, one thing is stumbling me about the whole thing and that is - how do I create footage that looks like it was filmed years ago? I'm thinking along the lines of slightly slow motion, no sound and a Charlie Chaplin era of film kind of look to it!! Can anybody help me?! Many thanks in advance!

try making your film black and white. Then try speeding it up just enough so that it looks like the are moving at the odd speed that they move in Chaplin films. Also if you have imovie (i havent used it in like three years) but i think they have a filter that makes teh film look old and grainy. As for the no sound, thats easy. When your editing just delete the sound. Hope this helped

Most programs have a visual noise filter that adds scratchs and grain to the picture, don't put in too much though, it really can detract from the film if its used in a overbearing manner. Final Cut has one, but Imovie's is actually better. What editing system do you have?

Thanks for your advice! I don't actually own any software packages for editing - any recommendations are welcome! I'm thinking of rooting out my Grandpas old cinefilm camera and seeing if that still works as that is just the kind of image I want to be able to produce!

Yes indeed, although the cinefilm is down at my Grannies house and unfortunatly my Grandpa passed away last year, so I have no hope of asking him how exactly I should work the damn thing! I will just have to play around!

and please do make sure your setting, make up, costumes etc all support the era you are trying to project. You really can't have a character in your 'old looking film' seated at a modern starbucks sporting the latest GAP trying to fgure out a nano ipod ?:)? Cheers.
