I have absolutely no way that I would be able to buy a really expensive camera right now but I just want to get something that I know I can start out on and just get started making films so...

This is pretty much what is going to fit into my budget.
Panasonic PV-GS150

I plan on buying the beachtek dxa-6 to help with the audio and i have a bunch of recording mics from being a musician.

I also have a mixer that I am going to run into the camera as well.

I've been reading this book how to make a film under 10,000 dollars and it talks about DAT. Would I need that?

So If I have the Beachtek adapter thing to use better mics I will get better audio correct?

Sorry I seem like a moron I am really new to all this and don't want to spend any money on something I might be unable to use.

thanks

You dont NEED a DAT. But it would help. So if it costs you money right now and you dont have the money to spend then dont bother.

As for the beachtek dxa-6...im not sure how much i can help you there. However, i can tell you this: If you get your hands on a boom pole (you can make one for under $30) and a decent to solid shotgun mic then plug it directly into the camera you should be set and able to get good quality sound, even without the bechtek. While it would be ideal to get a mixer and a DAT and wireless mic and a dxa-6, i think you can save alot of money and still get decent to good quality sound with just a boom pole and a nice shotgun mic. I would buy those two things before you get any other sound equipment. From my own experience i find that getting closer to your actor will greatly improve your sound regardless if you have all the mixers and extra stuff. Expecially on a indie filmmakers budget. Idealy you want the mic 6" from your actors head or closer if possible. And plug it directly into the camera.

So focus on getting decent equipment at an affordable price. Then once youve mastered that, move on to all the mixing and adapters. Obviously all the other stuff helps but as it seems you (as most of us do) have a very limited budget focus on the main tools and how to use them. Once again, you can make a boom pole for under $30.

And dont stop asking questions. Nobody here considers you a moron. We have all been where you are and have had the same questions floating in out heads. Good Luck.

With a nice shotgun mic, and a Beachtek adapter, and this great camera, you should be able to shoot some great stuff. I just read this review of the camera. Check it out!

wow thats nice. So what exactly will the dxa-6 do compared to plugging it directly into the camera?

It lets you have XLR plug ins that are able to be adjusted like crazy! Check it out:

It's okay, you can laugh at me. What's a DAT?

Digital Audio Tape. It's used for audio recording as well as computer backup.

Recording format is far less important than what you record: a good mike plugged into a Minidisk or a DV/HDV camera with a sound recordist who knows what they're doing will record better sound than a bad mike plugged into a high-end DAT, or a good mike with a sound recordist who's deaf.

I have a DAT, but I've barely used it in the last five years.
