I apologize in advance for asking such an elementary question, but I have only recently started to learn about filmmaking. How is sound added directly to 16mm film? Say I shoot with an Arriflex camera, is there a special type of film and synchronized recorder that can be used to directly record on the film stock?
Thanks very much!

Simple: it isn't. I believe 16mm sound film was available decades ago (e.g. for news footage), but it's not available today.
You can make a 16mm print with a sound track, but you'll have to record sound seperately.
