Anyone know of cheap (easy) software for adding captions to a film.

iMovie is free and does a great job!

Conversly if you're on a Windows XP based PC, "Windows Movie Maker" is built in and does a good job with captions as well.

What do you mean by "free"? That link you posted said it was like $79 or something.... Also, my pc doesnt seem to have windows movie maker....weird, because it is a very new media center pc. (I have been using roxio videowave, but am switching to vegas)

No one posted any links. Those are put there by the advertising engine that runs on the site.

Have you made sure you don't have Movie Maker? That seems a very odd thing to leave out of MCE... Check C:/Program Files/, there should be a Movie Maker folder in there even if it doesn't show up in the start menu.
