Junkie-slayer is a controversial new film set for release early next year.
Junkie-slayer is a new kind of Irish film, the like of which has never been made before. The film has the same kind of energetic, provocative filmmaking of films like choper and the razor eaters , a kind of filmmaking previously untried in Ireland.
The film written, directed, produced and photgraphed by newcomer Cathal Nally is about a loner street swepper who is plagued by memories of seeing a close friend die of an overdose as a teenager (i played the young junkieslayer). He becomes a vigilante cleaning Dublins streets of drug dealers and other scum. However when corrupt insurance companies and a gangster with a penchant for jail bat come up with a plan to raise insdurance premiumns that he gets in the way off , things get a whole lot harder for him...
Made completely independently between 2005 and 2007 on a low self-financed budget the junkie-slayer features a terifyingly convincing central performance as well as several great suppourting performances. It heralds a new filmmaker to the Irish scene.
Why i love this film is because it works on one level as a cracking vigilante thriller with some great fights , it also works as a social satire that deals with issues such as political corruption and gangland crime. Why its great really is that the director had some balls and made an "Irish film for people who hate Irish films".
And thats why its great.
