I used Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 for all the editing. For special effects we used all kind of stuff, but mostly Composite Lab Lite(an fxhome.com software)

I'm tired of using cheap Windows Movie Maker and I'm looking to upgrade so would you recommend getting Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9?

Oh ya definitely. Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 is pretty powerful and can do some professional editing. I got mine for 76 dollars on amazon last year, might be cheaper now.
