Afghan Star is a great documentary that is coming out June 26th in New York. I saw a preview screening and thought it was great! Afghan Star is the name of the "American Idol" of Afghanistan and the documentary follows four finalists, including two female contestants, as they make their way through the reality competition. During the Taliban rule in Afghanistan singing and dancing were outlawed, and this film shows how the country has come together to support (or, at times, not support) the contestants as they make their way through a competition that is both controversial and loved. One third of Afghanistan watched the finale! It's like a true-life Slumdog Millionaire. It won the World Cinema Documentary Audience and Directing Awards at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Check it out!
