In this industry, women make up only 19 percent of directors, producers and writers. For minority women, the percentage is even less. The imbalance is deeply rooted, and though it has been acknowledged and studied for years, there has been virtually no improvement. If the disparity is caused by lack of opportunity, we are hell bent on providing opportunity and exposure to minority female filmmakers.
For the second year in a row, Audience Awards has partnered with African American Women in Cinema to help create parity in this industry. The 19th AAWIC Film Festival seeks short webisode submissions, 45 minutes or less, directed, produced or written by women who are of African, Latina, Asian or Native American diaspora.
In support of their common mission of promoting positive change and giving women a path to fulfill their great potential, Her Majesty Wuraola-Zynab Otiti Ogunwusi, queen of Nigeria, will be in attendance at the AAWIC Film Festival. The queen?s passion for bettering the lives of women can be seen through her work with various charities and foundations across Nigeria.
This competition will launch during the AAWIC Film Festival March 22-25, 2017, in New York City. Our global audience will cast their votes to determine their favorite webisode. Along with audience awards cash and prizes listed below, there will also be an industry juror-curated winner who will receive a 12-month distribution deal with kweliTV.
