I would be very comfortable with this approach, because, in my practice, the only career I've really known, people start out with simple work and, over time, build an expertise and client base. And, over time, the internet will be more prevalent.

A web series would be independent of the TV studios, and, over time, with proper marketing, build a client base and, hopefully, get picked up by a TV channel or be used to make a movie that will be shown on theaters and make money.
