hey i just wanted to hear your people's opinion on this new idea I came up with for a movie a couple of weeks ago:

The film takes place at an unspecified point in the future, on the now two continents of Africa. Society has been broken back down to it's savage ways, people now live in scattered tribes, and all forms of technology have been wiped out. All his life, Arend, had been mentored by his older brother Koos. He taught him how to hunt, and how to survive in the wild plains of the Eastern Kalahari.

But everything changed when Cutheart Tribe fighters came after the two brothers and killed Koos in cold blood, believing he was involved in voodoo arts. Now, almost 10 years later, Arend faces the same fate. The Cuthearts have grown stronger and have begun overshadowing the other tribes. Their leader, Taburak, has begun targeting masses believed to be practicing the voodoo. Arend is one of them. He must now flee to the lush southern tip of Eastern Africa, and join a rebellion of witch doctors and refugees to fight back.

However, as they press on, a fury that has been trapped inside of Arend since the day Koos was killed has now been unleashed. Will he be able to lead the refugees to victory, or will his anger blind him and bring death to the rebellion?

Sounds like fun! Almost like... I don't know; Apocalypto + Gladiator? That sort of vein I guess.

So...

...you going to write a screenplay for this?

thanks and yeah that was my plan, pretty much to go to different sites, ask what people thought on the idea, and then if I got mostly positive review I would start writing something.

Yeah this would be really interesting to know.

Very true. I don't think there should be any issue here, but the threat of having an idea stolen is really something consider. It would be so easy to simply copy and paste, and bam some hack has their own new logline.

Aprt from the fact that there's a special place in hell reserved for hacks who proft from stolen ideas. 😉

But you can't really steal and "idea" which is why they cannot be
copyrighted.

Take a look at awesonesaucedirectors idea - society has broken
down to its savage ways, people living in scattered tribes, no
technology. Lots of movies like this, Steel Dawn, Le Dernier
Combat, Mad Max.

A young man with a mentor, a villain kills the mentor, the
protagonist joins a rebellion. That idea was used in Star Wars.

Is this special place in hell reserved for the hacks who use that
Heros Journey or only for hacks who set that journey in Africa as
awesonesaucedirector has?

No, just having a bit of oversimplifying fun. 😉

And I was referring to direct plagarizing of ideas, the victims of which can never be given justice. Of course "intellectual property" refers to concepts and ideas that are tangible and recorded through a medium, and such a thing is, unlike pure ideas, by definition "stealable." The issue here is unconsented direct and conscious emulation and application of ideas or concepts, for which there is no tangible medium and therefore no effective measure of justice. Influences, which are unavoidable, and coincidences, again unavoidable, are pretty much out of the question.

The issue is conscious replication of an idea where the one implicated does not give credit where credit is due.

It's one thing to make a no-budget Star Wars fan video in your backyard, quite another to say it was all your idea.
