Does winning a Telly Award really mean anything?

Recently I submitted one of my first professional works (a trailer for a feature film) to the 2008 Telly Awards. I ended up winning bronze for both the movie trailer and the internet marketing categories. At first I was excited, but then I started reading more into the awards and it appears they give these things out like candy.

While winning one is a sign that you are at least a competent filmmaker, does it really mean anything? I love how the winners are charged $150 to get the trophy (though they are REALLY nice trophies).

Any thoughts?

Does it actually indicate that you are a competent filmmaker?

They give out thousands of awards each year and is no limit to the number of
winners or finalists in any given category. And the wunners have to pay for
the trophy. That seems to mean the more awards they give out the more money
they get.

My feeling is if you are a competent filmmaker you will know it based on how
well people like you movie, not by getting an award like this one.
