Very few, if any, get "a break" in the film industry. Most, if not all, those who build a sustainable career do so by understanding the realities of the industry, working hard, and keeping the passion and perseverance necessary to weather the slow times.
Could someone "be discovered" because their genius short film was seen by just the right person at a film festival? Maybe. Almost anything is possible. But it isn't likely. The odds are definitely against it.
So, make your short films and get them out there in whatever way it takes, but don't rely on the "fantasy" that you'll be discovered at a film festival and "get a break." Instead, learn everything you can about the REALITIES of the professional film industry and then work very hard to earn an income IN the business while meeting people who can help you build an actual viable career.
