Emmy-award winning film and TV composer, Michael Whalen, is seeking new
silent films for his next in his series of "Music in the Dark"
performances scheduled for Wednesday November 17th, 2004 in New York
City.
"Music in the Dark" will feature Michael improvising extemporaneous
'scores' for 8 - 10 new silent films commissioned and/or chosen for the
evening from a diverse group of filmmakers and video artists. The
composer will be performing primarily on piano, however, in some cases
the sound of the instrument will be processed through a variety of
computer-controlled sound devices and he will be triggering loops and
effects as needed. "'In the silent era', music for films was a
combination of a pianist playing off-the-shelf classical pieces as well
as improvisation as needed to connect the material. I am simply winding
the clock backwards in terms of approach and, hopefully, looking
forward in terms of my musical content" says Michael. The last
performance of "Music in the Dark" took place in February at the
Anthology Film Archive in New York.
The films (or videos) should be 3 - 5 minutes long and they should work
in a music only context (no dialog, no sound effects). Filmmakers who
are interested in submitting finished work should contact Michael
directly at: michael *at* michaelwhalen.com
