Back on the subject of filming a feature, which is the best aspect ratio? I've filmed both 4:3 and 16:9 for short films, and I know 16:9 is better for theaters (again, the only reason this would be put on film is if it gets into a good film festival and is distributed). But do producers prefer a certain aspect ratio over the other? I prefer widescreen, as it feels more open and lets you see more. Any input would be great, thanks.
Well, shooting widescreen as a rule, allows you to see less (just think of all the video missing in a letterbox). The only time 4:3 shows you less is when a widescreen film has been adapted to 4:3 for TV or Video.
There is no "best" aspect ratio. Some DPs like 2.66 widescreen, some like 1.65, a whole bunch like 1.85. I've worked with a DP that swears by 4:3.
Personally I like 1.65, but not many people agree with me. 1.85 and 4:3 are standards, 2.66 is usually only used when trying to create a certain type of effect.
If your camera shoots natural 4:3, shoot it 4:3 and you can letterbox it in post (make sure your DP knows if you plan to do this). If not, shoot a few sample clips of 4:3 and 16:9 and see what you like.
