Hey guys,
I'm graduating college soon and have been producing shorts and features the entire time but I want to become more knowledgeable in all aspects of filmmaking (such as equipment). If anyone could breakdown the major brands of cameras (i.e. sony, panasonic) and the major models they sell, in the different price ranges.. I would greatly appreciate it!. Also, which ones are legit and not.
I am looking at buying a camera before i graduate for around 3k, so this could be a big help!
Time for you to do some serious research.
I'm not going to research and type out the entire catalogue of Sony, Panasonic,
etc. for you. That will take hours. But I will offer you a starting place for your
own research.
The major brands of cameras are JVC, Canon, Panasonic and Sony. Samsung
and Sharp also make excellent cameras. The prices range from $500 for consumer
cameras to $4,000/$6,000 for "prosumer" cameras to $8,000/$25,000 for
professional ENG cameras.
Check out B&H PhotoVideo. They list the price and specs of nearly all cameras
available. The even have a search by price feature so you can narrow down your
choices.
The good news is all the major camera manufacturers are legit so you don't have
to worry about that. If you find a camera made by a company you've never heard
of, type that company's name into Google and see what you can find about it. Or,
better yet, just bypass it altogether. The major manufacturers make such excellent
cameras there is no need to spend much time researching companies that may
not be legit just to save a couple of hundred.
There are several websites dedicated to cameras, pricing and consumer reviews.
If you can't find any, I'll help out.
Welcome to filmmaking.net, braunr. What college are you graduating from? Did
you study film? Since you have already produced features, what cameras did you
use on them? Can you let us see the short films you've made?
