I'm getting a wee bit of funding for a summer project and I'm planning on working in super 8. The question is, what camera would be right for me? I'll be shooting plus-x and maybe a little tri-x. I don't require an xl camera, but I would like to have a longer zoom range than my Elmo (which only covers 9mm-27mm). Compounding the issue is budget. I am willing to pay up to fifty (I'm a big spender) yes fifty American greenbacks for a camera with a sharp fast lens. I'd also like to expand my options between the banality of 18fps and try a little slow and fast motion. What do you fine folks recccomend?

Also, have any of you had any experience with the Zenit Quarz? If you're one of these people who hates Russian gear, don't respond. I used a Zenit 12xp for years without incident.

I wonder if anyone here still remembers their 8mm... Last time I touched an 8mm camera was about 30 years ago (Jimmy Carter was still the president of US).

I shall assume your choice of 8mm is strictly aesthetic (it cannot be financial, considering the amount of money to be spent on film stock and processing). That Zenit device is really so retro-cool. I really don't know the quality of optics, but the ability to run with no batteries is certainly intriguing.

I still shoot super 8 every once in a while. Music videos mostly.

I've never used the Zenit Quarz, but since you've used a Zenit in
the past and like it, I suspect you'll be happy with with super 8
version.
