Hello Folks,

I have recently purchased ?url="http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/camcorders/sony-handycam-hdr-xr155e-review-50001276/"?Sony HDR-XR155E?/url? .. I am quite interested in filmmaking, and am trying to learn about it from net/book..well, i know I MUST go out and shoot if i want to learn filmmaking...

I know I cannot shoot film with this camera, but I at least can learn about shooting, framing, and some other basic things about cinematography..Since nobody is there to help me out, I am knocking the online forums since you guys are more experienced and have more knowledge about filmmaking..

what my questions are:
1. can I somehow shoot a short film with this camcorder for any festival or TV? I will record sound externally anyway since this camcorder doesn't have any external mic input.

2. Is it possible to use lenses (wide or telephoto) with this camcorder?

3. Shall I go for pro tripods or will it be okay if I use amateur tripod to pan/tilt.. for example: ?url="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cullmann-52601-Nanomax-260-Tripod/dp/B0029LHW2W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1290791197&sr=1-1"?Cullmann Nanomax 260?/url?

Thnx in advance.

Best Regards

You sure can. What festivals look for is creativity. If you
have a great script, excellent actors, light well, capture
prefect audio and are a creative director and editor you
can make a fine short film with that little camera.

You have your challenges, but you can overcome them.

There are adaptors available but I don't think that specific
camera can use them. You'll have to do some research.

For that camera that tripod is fine.

I was thinking so as my camcorder doesn't weigh much but 300 gm.

For now, as you are learning, you can do quite will without using a wide or
telephoto lens. Do not allow your current limitations to hold you back. Use
the camera you have with the lens it has. Make five or six short films. That
will take several months. When you have several finished films and are in
the process of entering them in festivals you can think about upgrading
your camera.

Maybe, as you make more movies you will attract other people to help you.
Maybe even someone who owns a camera with the wide and telephoto lens
you feel you need. Then you can concentrate on directing and allow the
other person to be the director of photography.

Of course, if your goal is to be a DP, then you can buy a better camera
in a few years. But don't let not having a wide or telephoto lens right
now slow you down. I'll be you can figure out how to make a pretty
good movie with either of those lenses. Am I right?

lemme tell you a story..I used to write poems years ego..I even worked on music for a while..I always wanted to stick into some creative works..?just to let u know I cannot write poem anymore?

I have watched a lot films as I am fond of it..I was just thinking that writing poem's just writing poem..there's no other relative field u could jump on...but filmamking is a enormous field with lots of sub-fields..I think I will enjoy filmmaking by learning a lot from it and by delivering my creativity..

I just believe one thing most.. MYSELF.. if they can do, why can't me? They are not aliens, are they?

anyway, thank you so much for your suggestions.. as I have got 12 concepts, I will start working on them..I will make couple of zero budget films.. Let me just finish my study by january..

The principal difference between the camcorder you have and $2,500 semi-professional models is in limitations. Under most optimal conditions, even professionals will find it difficult to tell the difference between image quality of your camcorder and image from a $2.5k model (such as, for example, Panasonic HMC-150). However, those most optimal conditions are fairly narrow (ideal lighting, little fast motion, etc). Therefore, you will have to learn your camcorder well, discover all of its limitations and shoot your films around those limitations. Cheap tripod, cheap work lights (from home improvement store), do-it-yourself bounce boards and similar should help you overcome some of the limitations. Most importantly, cheap microphone on a cheap boom pole, to properly capture your dialogue. This is one most important thing worth repeating: audiences will often ignore sub-optimal picture (i.e. too dark, too bright, washed out, crushed blacks, etc). They will NEVER forgive less than perfect audio. Properly recorded dialogue will mark the distinction between an amateur camcorder home movie and a professional feature film.

Bounce board is usually a large board (about 1 - 1.5m in diameter) covered with either reflective material (such as aluminium foil), or painted white. You use it to bounce light in the direction of your subject. It is often used when shooting outdoors, to direct sunlight into the face of the subject. Essentially, to function as a 'fill' light. Usually, it is held by a grip (assistant to the key grip).
