A painters pole. A mop or broom with the business end taken off.

Both make excellent boom poles. Add a shock mount and you're good to go.

Way back when - when I was just getting started and had no money at all
I remember taking a wire cloths hanger, straightening it out then making
a circle at one end. I taped the straight end to a broom. stretched two rubber
bands across the circle and slipped the mic into the rubber bands.

It worked as a pretty sweet shock mount.

There is a place called "Studio 1", they have a website, probably under the same name. I got a 105 inch boom pole for about $120 on it, a pretty good price compared to some others.

Yes, a painter's pole can work nicely. Just remember that the shock mount is very, very important here. If your mic isn't properly insulated from the reverberation of hand movements, etc. You'll have terrible sound. Let me tell you, if there's anywhere you should spend your money, it's on sound. Weaknesses in image quality and performance are always much more readily forgiven than bad sound. Bad sound will kill a film every time.

C.I., I love your DIY solution. Way to be inventive to get the job done on a budget. 🙂

In the latest Kevin Smith movie the characters used a hockey stick for a boom pole. I thought that was kind of funny. Of ocurse they were filming a porno so audio quality wasn't really an issue.

Own3d, make no mistake, you are cheap, but that's nothing to be ashamed of. Film is by far the most expensive artform and anything you can do to cut cost by being inventive and still get the results you need is a thing to be proud of. 🙂

Oh, and BTW, you can use shipping foam to make a shock mount. Find the stiff stuff, usually white, which you can drill through. Then you can just use cable "zip ties" to hold everything together. 🙂
