Hi everyone,

I am working as a graphic designer and digital marketing manager for a major healthcare mag in the UK. The directors want to begin recording a weekly news and highlights show to be broadcast on our website and on youtube.

At the moment we currently have no equipment at all. I studied film about 13 years ago, so I am a little rusty!

I am wondering if any of you can help me with a comprehensive list of all the equipment I'll need to get this off the ground and any suggestions on tech?

This should include:

-camera/tripod
-sound equipment - I am thinking tie-mics
-Lighting (we have an area of the office set aside for filming this weekly and dont have a huge amount of space)

If anyone can help me with this, it would massively appreciated! 🙂

Many thanks,

Oliver

Hi There,

Let me start with a disclaimer: I work for Ikan, a medium-sized manufacturer and distributor of video accessories. I feel dirty posting in forums without saying that, especially about gear.

Now: what kind of budget are you working with? There are lots of possible recommendations, all across the board, but most recommendations are going to hinge on two things: what are the technical requirements you will need from your camera, and what is your budget like?

From the sound of things, you'll probably want to record with a mirrorless camera or DSLR, and, if you aren't moving around too much, you can skip on a tripod with lots of features, like fluid drag and 20-stage counterbalance, for something light, easy, and inexpensive. If you aren't moving at all, you could probably cheat and go photo for the tripod, instead of video.

Given the space constraints, a good lav mic (tie-mic) is probably your best bet. Gauge the type and quality you buy on the sound quality.

As for lighting, are you doing single-subject, interview (two subject), or another style of video? If single-subject, you could likely get away with a two-light kit, and those are pretty easy to find. They'll even come with stands and bags for travel/storage most of the time. Pick lights based on their intensity (LUX or foot candles at a given distance) and color fidelity (CRI or, if it is listed, TCLI or, in a perfect world, TM-30-15). Weight the specs against the room in your budget, and go for the best fit.

I hope this has helped. I can't do specific recommendations without more information, and I certainly don't want to just throw a bunch of Ikan recommendations out at you, but I hope these guidelines help narrow things down a bit.

Yes, I work for Ikan.

It would be interesting to know what oliver went with. His post is two and half years old.
