I'm just getting into the film making world, i've been looking around and i really like the look and feel of the footage that the Canon XL2 makes on miniDV, its a bit pricey so im going to go with an XL1 intsead, i don't notice a great deal in differance, but there is a great deal of differance in the price.

I want to get that 'movie' feel to it and i have been told getting a redrock m2, which im not familliar with, but apparently its a small holder for the camera that allows you to use a 35mm lense.

Can anyone clear this up for me, is the equipment compatible with the XL1, and once i have it, will i have to buy a 35mm lense?
And is it worth it?

Thank you, and sorry if i've posted in the wrong place.

The Redrock http://www.redrockmicro.com/micro35.html is an adapter so you
can add a lens to your video camera. Most video cameras do not have interchangeable
lenses. The Canon does.

However you can use the adaptor with the XL1. And yes, you will have to buy or
hire the lens you want to use with your camera and the adaptor.

Thanks, can i ask your oppinion on this?
Is it worth buying a redrock m2, or would this do the same job?

One of the few things I like about the XL series is its interchangeable
lens. That EF adaptor is very useful. I use one with my JVC - the only
other camera that offers interchangeable lenses.

This video was made using a redrock, and an 85mm lense.
If i buy that cheaper EF adapter, would it allow me to have the same lense they used in that video? And would it be of the same quality?
This is the final question, promise ;D

Questions here on the filmmaking.net forums are fine. No need to stop asking.

The lens is one important aspect of good picture quality. Lighting is another. If
you simply put a great lens on your camera and do nothing else you won't get
the same quality as you see in that video. You will get the shallow DOF with
any prime lens. If that's all you're asking about, then the answer is yes. But if
you don't light as well as they did in that clip, the answer is no. The Redrock
or the EF adaptor isn't the end of excellent quality images - it's only the beginning.

So to get a good depth of field, i buy the EF adapter?

What does the redrock m2 have that the ef adapter doesnt have?

Im just really confused, is the redrock m2 and the ef adapter the same thing? will they both just allow me to add a lense on the end, or does the ef adapter take off the prime lense, and let me put on a differant one. while the redrock adds another to the already prime lense?

It's just i want to be 500% sure before i commit to buy the XL1

The Redrock fits on the lens of a video camera.

The EF adaptor is for cameras that have a removable lens.

The XL1 has a removable lens so you can use either one. Most other video
cameras have a fixed lens so only the Redrock adaptor can be used.

Both systems allow you to use a better lens. In your case you can choose
either option. For people who have a camera with a fixed lens they can
not use the EF adaptor.

If you buy the XL1 you can use either the Redrock or the EF.

May I suggest you buy the camera you want and then hire a Redrock
adaptor and a lens for a day. Then hire an EF adaptor and a lens for a
day. That way you can test which one is best for your needs and then
buy the adaptor that works for you.

Nothing is better than actually holding the equipment in your hand
and rolling tape. Nothing.

The M2 is also $400 off during the holidays. If you haven't decided on getting one, this info might help make up your mind! I'm getting one for my Panasonic HVX-200 just so I can use it with some of my PL primes.

Not the best device for getting DOF from a fixed lens camera but certainly an affordable one.

I recently purchased a redrock m2 for my canon xh-a1s and now i am looking for a lens to attach to it. Can anyone tell me which lens would best fit this set-up, and do i just need the lens or some type of lens adapter for the M2? The cheaper the better preferably. Thanks

Which lens depends on what you need and the lens mount
ring on the Redrock. Which mount did you buy? Do you
want prime lenses or a zoom?

The entire point of getting a lens adaptor isn't to then use
a cheap lens. You're XH-A1 already has a cheap lens (relatively
speaking). In order to get the DoF I assume you are after
you should be using a very nice, expensive set of prime
lenses. A 50mm is standard.
