Hi all,

Have had a question in the community about the best indie film tripod to use for shooting with a canon 5d mark 3 with extras such as long lens, matt box, monitor extra attached.

So far have come up with

1) Manfrotto 546BK legs with the 504HD head
2) Libec RS-450
3) Vinten Vision Blue
4) Sachtler Ace

Any thoughts on above, I've heard that 1) Manfrotto should be discounted as its not very good, the 4) Sachtler is a little on the light side so not great if you have all the extras attached on the canon, but heard good things about the other 2 the Vinten and the Libec.

Any thoughts?

thanks
R

For the money the Manfrotto is an excellent under $800 set. My
very first set was a Manfroto and I still use it decades later. But
if you trust the person who told you it should be discounted as
its not very good, then go with who you trust - not me.

Sachtler makes some of the best heads in the lower prices. They
are not heavy duty in the "Ace" category but just fine for the very
light 5D

Since you have head good things about the Vinten and the Libec
you should go with one of them. I've never used a Viten but their
LF head alone is over $700 so it's better than a Sachtler and
Manfrotto kit. The Libec kit is $1,500. Looks good to me. Go with
that one.

Thanks. Just want to minimise current and future spend that's all. Even the Vinten is ?750 so quite pricey.

Well I went to a store near Euston today called Calumet - awesome place

Tested out their Manfrotto 546 bk and 504 head tripod for around 10 mins but they were closing

seems its around ?570 so expensive

The said they could order the sachtler ace m for less so seems better to get that any views?

The head 504HD seems a newer model anyone have any practice with that head?

plus the vinten is around ?700+ so expensive

could go with Manfrotto though legs seem a little wobbly even with the floor spreader, so that leaves the sachtler which is cheaper and may be better

anyone have any experience with the sachtler????

that said the shop was awesome would recommend it great bunch and they seem to have a lot of kit for photographers and videography there including hiring options

Great that you have a shop where you can test out the equipment. That will go a long way
in helping you make the decision.

Manfrotto is a very good brand and i have very good experience with this brand but price is little high. Recently i shifted to another brand, their tripods are very cheap, quality is also well built. I am using proaim carbon fiber tripod stand http://www.dvcity.com/dvshop/Proaim-75mm-bowl-head-Carbon-fiber-tripod-stand-CF-75-with-free-spreader.html, very light weight and best for travelling. Their all tripods aluminium http://www.dvcity.com/dvshop/Proaim-75mm-bowl-head-tripod-stand-P-BW-75-with-spreader-with-75mm-fluid-head.htmlas well as cf are very cheap.
