How "outdated" is this camcorder? Still useable for a noob filmmaker? Thanks
You are very limited with audio. It's very usable for a new filmmaker.
But to be a step above most you need to spend as much effort on
audio as you do on what camera you use. Poor audio is the downfall
of most new filmmakers.
But you can start making movies with that camera. When will you
shoot your first one?

The important part is that it is a MiniDV model. With a firewire cable, the footage can go into any computer with a firewire connector, and you can edit it with whatever software is available to you. Even the included iMovie (if you have a Mac) or MovieMaker (if it is not a Mac) will give you enough tools to start making movies. If you are an advanced computer user, Cinelerra for Linux is in many ways as powerful as FCP, Premiere or Avid.
But most important thing is to answer Certified Instigator's question: when are you starting to shoot the first movie?
