i dunno if this is really an answerable question. but is buying cameras (eg cannon XM2) of ebay a good idea, is it like buying cars of ebay which can be fishy/riskey?.

There are two different kinds of sales people on Ebay. The first is the average person who is selling their stuff. Buying from them can be hit or miss. If they've sold a lot of stuff their rating will tell you if they are trustworthy or not. If they've not sold a lot of stuff you're are taking a big chance buying a big priced item. The second kind of Ebay seller is actually a store that uses Ebay as their online presence. These types may not have super deals but they are usually cheaper than normal stores and they generally want to protect their Ebay rating so they are honest and dependable.
