I've been working on a feature length movie for a couple of years (check out my site). I will probably be done by the end of this year. Portions of this movie are good as standalone short films. People have suggested I enter short films or work-in-progress into festivals. Why do people try to get films into festivals? What purpose do they serve? I'm not being snide or anything. I'm ignorant. I want to know.

The purpose of a festival is to get noticed by an audience, and distributors and dealers, so that you could get a deal with a major company and be living the high life.

That sounds good. But do THEY really pay attention? How do you find out what festivals are high profile and still open to odd newcomers?

If you have a really good film, ?they? will pay attention - if the film is seen. And festivals are a great way to get your film seen. Many films got noticed because of festivals. And many, many more didn?t.

You don?t need to start at the best of the best festivals. In fact, getting into one of the top 10 festivals can be just as hard as finding distribution. Sometimes winning awards at several small festivals - or even just creating a ?buzz? - will interest prodCo?s, agents and producers.
