We are self distributing the film The Dogwalker in the US this summer. It was written and directed by Jacques Thelemaque. Jacques also started and heads Film Makers Alliance in Los Angeles. FA is a non-profit film making collective that helps it's members get their films made.
We have started a grassroots advertising campaign to promote The Dogwalker and we hope to create a template for other film makers who would like to self distribute. You can visit our web sites
www.thedogwalkerfilm.com and www.filmmakersalliance.com. We would be happy to answer any questions you have about the process thus far, and will keep you updated on the release of our film. We hope you come out and support us!

I don't ask this to be antagonistic but I do ask it sincerely and it's meant to challenge you (Dogwalker) and everyone else:

Before you made "The Dogwalker" and started self distribution, did you buy movies made by people you don't know, starring actors you've never heard of? So many movie makers want (and need) people to buy their movie, but don't buy movies from other independent movie makers.

I think you have a great idea here. I hope to make the July 16 meeting.

Great question.

I did indeed. But I realize that few people do go to or buy movies from people they don't know starring actors they've never heard of. But enough do to make it profitable and meaningful. They usually purchase by recommendation - word of mouth from personal contacts or from "trusted guides" (reviewers, bloggers, festivals, awards, etc.).

We are in the process of building support from "trusted guides". It's not easy, but we're learning more and more about it every day. Hopefully, all of our work will create a slow-building "snowball effect". Y'know, the long tail theory. We'll see.
