Aloha all,

just joined and already found some great info- thanks!

We're self distributing and working on proposals for re-sellers. Ours is a doc about marine life so we will be approaching dive shops, aquariums etc besides book stores and the obvious. Just not sure what the going rate for the percentage split is- i.e. should we offer the re-seller 10% or 50%? anyone have any info (URL's) or advice regarding this? Will be much appreciated!

Thank you.

I don't think in self-distribution there's any standard split, but I'd say 10% is probably too low and 50% probably too high.

It's not exactly the same, but book publishers would typically offer a "discount" off the retail price to book sellers of 30% - 45%. In other words, if the retail price is $20 you would charge the bookstore between $11 and $14 for each copy.

Given you are effectively asking for a favour from the dive stores, you're probably going to need to be reasonably generous. Set the retail price and offer them a 40% discount and see what they say.
