I'll be starting to work on finding the right distribution in Australia for some films from overseas soon and I seek some info regarding film distribution.

I'll be like an agent or so but I just want to take a percentage off when the film are being distributed and do so that it will not affect the filmmaker. In fact that will benefit everyone from the distributor to myself to the filmmaker.

I know that an agent takes between 10 to 30% commission from the film distribution revenues.

So whatever the percentage, does it include revenues from theatrical, home videos/rentals cable, TV altogether? What percentage would be fair to take so everyone will be benefit, especially not leaving the filmmaker without nothing just about?

Does it work out better to do a deal for everything with a one distributor for like theatrical, rental, retail, cable TV or can I do separate deals with for each and one of them with different distributors strong in each sector?

I seek to implement the split rights strategy meaning that whether I make deals with one or different distributors still keep rights for the filmmaker or myself on her/his behalf, to do own sales separate from sites and the like.

Let me know.

Thank you.

Regards,

Are these films with actors with genuine box office draw or are we just talking about indie movies? This is not 1990 any more. No indie movie gets theatrical distribution. TV broadcast? Good luck! The Internet has replaced the agent. No need to give away 20 to 30%. Just sign up with Amazon Advantage. NetFlix only orders 60 copies so they are a rip off. Sign up with FilmBaby if you insist on selling out to NetFlix. Not sure if Film Baby handles digital distribution to iTunes and Amazon digital store -- If not then TUneCore does but that will cost you $750. Not worth it for the vast majority of indie films. Too much to talk about. Here's some reading...

Actually, I have several connections. One of my partners has a direct distribution deal, so the films released through him go into theaters in the US, about 2500 screens. I also have some other PPV and OD and DVD connections. The films we are releasing are in fact indie films, not huge blockbusters. These are films made for a few million bucks, so there is hope, if your project is solid. Let me know what you have.
