I just joined this forum. So hello everyone.

I'm about to finish my first film. When You Get To Heaven. I know I probably won't get a distrution deal through a major company. So here is my plan, tell me what you think.

1. create website, myspace page with plenty of trailers, production stills, and making of info.
2. go on tour. Screen the movie anywhere I can, in backyards, art galleries, punk houses, show spaces etc. Sell T-shirts and DVDs at the shows to cover some of the costs.
3. offer free DVDs and promotional materials on the website to anyone that is willing to set up screenings in there own town. Use website to allow people to post info on there local screenings.

Its seems everyone is trying to sell a DVD on their movie website, but who wants to buy a dvd of a movie they have never heard of, staring a bunch of nobodys? I want to make it as easy as possible for people to watch my movie, sure this means losing money but how else is someone (a nobody like me) going to get there name and film out there?

if your intrested I have a myspace pages = www.myspace.com/whenyougettoheaven be my friend, let me know what your projects are.

Sounds like an excellent plan.

A year ago I read a biography of John Cassavetes. That's what he did with "A Woman Under
the Influence ". He put 35mm prints in his car and went from town to town. And that film was
nominated for two Oscars.

I think use my blog............flixter....place pics of gripping scenes....picks of while prodution........update blog daily for 2 to 3 months regarding what happened on shoots etc...........more and more details.........get registered with blog search engines...few are placed at my blog

www.indie-filmmaking.blogspot.com

just check them............mypsace..and facebook both will be good for you.............try 1 or 2 more social networking sites......this will help you......

if your movie really has something try to organise a small party where you can atleast call few local cable TV channels and news paper agents .....and screen the movie their .....it is not necessary that you should invite the best.TV and Newspaper guys but even the low category will help you though inviting a better level channel news paper wil lreally crate a market for you...........if possible and if you really think that your movie has something to watch then try invite any famous media personality at you screening but remember be honest while doing this that your movie really really has something to show.......otherwise you might see a heading saying

A bloody idiot wasted our time....

so first of all be honest and then try these things.......you might ask some local companies of mid or low level of your area to place their ads in form of panaflex etc while screening your movie and you will charge them a low amount....this will help you to finance your small party...........infact this might create more buzz because those companies will no doubt tell their customers that they have financed a movie...( though they have only financed the party but who cares buddy) even if they are honest they will say a party related to a film is financed by us and this and that....and this will make more and more buzz.....

Hey David,

Sounds like you got a rock solid plan. In fact, it is quite similar to an article titled "Road Trip" that I read in the Fall 08 issue of Filmmaker Magazine - The production's DIY tour is doing wonders for their film.

Good Luck! ?:)?

Distribution is changing. If you can get your movie on the Amazon marketplace, suddenly your movie will be listed among a whole bunch of mainstream titles appealing to the same market. I know some folks have utilized the CreateSpace service.

The "tour" approach can definitely work. It does need to planned and carefully targeted. This is how Sam Raimi got EVIL DEAD out and about in the early 80s. He took it on tour to college campuses. More recently, I read about a movie titled HEAD TRAUMA that toured and was quite successful (seven figures successful as I recall). Now, I see that movie on cable all the time, and it was shot on DV. The tour can definitely work, and if you hunt around a bit, you can probably find a successful model.
