Please be more specific what you mean by "indie movie".

A movie that isn't made by a studio is an independent film. Any of the theaters I
listed will show a movie that has distribution even if it wasn't made by a studio.

If you are asking about a movie that doesn't have distribution, then I don't know the answer.

Producers have very little sway with Theaters. I believe you can usually rent one if you have a 16 mm or 35mm print. It's super expensive though, so you really need to bring in the traffic.

There are many theaters that will play independent films. Many of
the chain theaters I mentioned will show them. Typically this is
a rental agreement between the filmmaker and the theater owner.

A distributor will negotiate a deal to play a movie in many
theaters - this type of agreement must be done on an theater by
theater basis. In other words, the filmmaker takes on the
role of the distributor - including expenses and contacting
theaters.

There is no difference between a filmmaker and an indie filmmaker. Anyone who
makes movies is a filmmaker. Some of us make movies without a studio - that
make us an indie filmmaker.

Well, someone has to pay for the promotion and other expenses. The studios
pay for all the marketing, prints, posters, TV and radio spots and newspaper
ads. When a filmmaker or indie filmmaker makes a film without a studio
then someone still has to pay for everything. The theaters don't do it, the
distributor covers these costs.

Casting a big star makes marketing easier. People will go see a movie if
they know who is in it. What's the first thing the average person asks when
you mention a movie?

Do that ask, "What camera was it shot on?"
Do they ask, "What lights were used?"
Do they ask, "Who is the DP?"
Do that ask, "Who's in it?"

Personally I always ask "What was the format of the film to digital transfer?'

I... don't see many movies...

How to promote a movie at a low budget is an even more important
question than the usual "what camera should I get" question. But it's
a question not often asked.

One can use any camera to make a movie - but promoting it is the
difficult part. I have several suggestions but maybe others can come
up with some ideas, too.

You're all creative people, right? What ways can you come up with to
promote your finished move on a low budget?

although sometimes overused, making a myapce for you film sometimes helps. of course, tell all of your friends and relitives to watch it and spread the word. my only other suggestions would be to have a premiere party and sell dvd's at it. then again, im new to the industry. only 15 years old. i'm sure someone else has better suggestions.

i also have a graphic designer in my group (to make dvd covers, prints, posters, etc.). he helps me alot. you could hire one pretty cheap, i think. we sometimes hand out flyers, or posters and such. we also once performed a publicity stunt showing up to one of our 8th grade dances in charecter of one of our films, handing out flyers with the show =)
