I am not an experienced filmmaker by any means, but I have been creating and promoting websites for the past 9 years. Now that I have earned some decent money from these websites, I am in the process of starting my film making career.

One of the first things you should do is start a website dedicated to your film. Websites are cheap and easy to make, and you can learn how to build a site very easily.

After your site is up and running, and you are are getting close to post production, go to as many forums as you can and start rumors about your film. Preferably forums dedicated to the kind of film you are making, but it doesn't hurt to post in any kind of forum. Be sure to include a link to your movies website in your post. Forums get thousands of visitors and are a great way to get traffic to your website.

Post clips on YouTube, but do not say that this is from your movie. One of the most intriguing words to use is "Leaked", and millions of people use this word when looking up movies or other information that is hard to find. So the title in your YouTube clip should read something like: Clip leaked from the new movie "Your Movie Title".

I am going to stop there for now. I could keep going on but I don't want to make this post a novel. I will post more tips later.

Contacts are everything. It's always a good thing to scour the internet for genre based websites (like horror movie websites) and get in the good with the administrators. When it comes to getting your movie out there you can do an exclusive interview with those people or they would be more than happy to put you in the news.

those are some good tips. i think we are in a period in between the future and the past of film distribution. that sounds obvious, but i think the internet is going to develop some interesting new distribution models in the near future that will give a lot more people access.
