Does any one have information on encrypting a completed movie? I would like to post my mini-DV feature to DVD. I may distribute the movie via web and ship the DVD's from a pressing house or initially distribute them from home. Is there any software that I can embed encryption code into the DVD disks? I searched all over and I don't seem to get the answer I need. Thanks.

CSS was cracked years ago: I don't understand why anyone still uses it to encrypt DVDs when it's so trivial for people to download a program to crack it.

I didn't understand your answer. I'm looking for software that will encrypt a DVD movie that I will produce. I will make the master DVD on my PC for distribution. Thank you.

My point was that anyone who wants to copy your movie can trivially download software to crack the encryption... so why bother?

Also, I don't believe it's possible to make an encrypted master DVD with a PC DVD drive: unless they've changed it in the last year or two, PC drives aren't allowed to write to the parts of the disk where the encryption key is stored. Thanks Hollywood!

Hi Kim,

Are you infact asking about how to encode your movie in DVD-format, rather than how to encrypt it?

Encryption is a method for preventing unauthorised access to data, and in the DVD context is used to prevent people from simply putting a DVD into a computer drive and copying the files from it. However, as MarkG point's out, the DVD encryption was cracked years ago, so is largely a waste of time if you're looking for complete security.

If you are indeed asking about how to encode your movie for DVD release, then the answer is simple. You just need to get your hands on a DVD encoding application. There are a huge number of these applications available for all user levels (although bear in mind that the more expensive packages give you more flexibility). Check out a product called ReelDVD from Sonic, Ulead's DVD Workshop, or Apple's DVD Studio Pro (if you're a Macophile). Adobe also make a program called Encore, however I'd recommend staying clear of that since it's only at version 1 and the release version is buggy and difficult to use. DVD Workshop and DVD Studio Pro are both available from the filmmaking.net store.
