Wow. 30 GB is a lot, and I know I will probably not use that much with a dvd, but I would like to know if there is such a thing as a Duel-Layer HD DVD?
Your help would be appreciated.

Yeah, dual layer HD DVD does exist. Likely only for pre-recorded movies at this point.
I would strongly recommend aiming for Blu-ray instead of HD DVD. A)It holds more right off the bat.
B)advertising companies know that cool sells... who wants to say a mouthful of syllables like 'H-D-D-V-D' when they can say 'Blu-Ray'
C)Blu-Ray has much better copy protection capabilities, which means that movie companies will learn to love this movie format
Perhaps Sony's Beta tapes did go the way of the dinosaur... but I do seem to recall them looking better than VHS tapes.... Don't let the inferior rule.

Yes, I have been looking into Blu-ray, I actually have some blank blu-rays, but I have not used them yet. They work for me, but aren't they only able to be played on Blu-ray players? Because they are about $1200, and I would like for myself and my family to watch the films I made.
I will probably use Blu-Ray for films of mine that I will show to distributers, but I will use DL HD DVDs for my family and I.
Also, where could I purchase DL HD DVDs? Because I cannot find them at any comsumer stores. Unless they are in the prosumer range. But I doubt that.

Well I do believe that to watch HD DVD's, you need to have an HD DVD player (in other words, as far as I know, they won't play in a regular DVD player). As far as getting a blu-ray player, instead of going for a $1200 player, you could pick up a $600 Playstation 3 (because, of course, they play blu-ray discs).
Not to mention, I'm sure that you could burn a copy as DVD and also a copy as either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, so you have a standard definition DVD as well as a hi-def disc

Do I need to purchase some sort of Blu-Ray writer in order to burn my films onto Blu-Ray? Or will my regular DVD/CD writer take care of that?
The same question goes for HD-DVDs.

Yes, you have to buy a blu-ray burner. they run a little over 700 dollars at the moment. In order to burn HD DVD's, as far as I KNOW, you dont need a special burner, because my mac pro has dvd studio pro 4 on it, and i can burn hi def discs on regular dvd's.. so im not sure if im just burning my shorts in hi-def on a regular disc just because they are only five minutes or so, or if hi def discs are just sooped up regular dvd's. who knows, but either way, your going to needa player for either blu-ray or hd dvd. And i strongly support Blu-Ray, even though it is so darn expensive, just because the drives are out, the media is out, and its being backed by sony and several large movie studios, but that is just me. lol. PM me if u want more info on how to burn hi def discs. IM starting my own production company with a group of friends and are trying to go pro level with a big relaease onto the silver screen. we shall see.
I might be 18, but watch out, everyone has to start somewhere. I'm just starting a bit faster and bigger. 🙂
