Hello,

I am supposed to put together portion of a budget for a movie and the producer wants me to get pricing from Direct to Video Companies. So once the movie is done instead of going to movie theaters it is put on DVD and distributed.

Does anyone know any companies that do this?

There are thousands.

What pricing are you looking for? DTV companies do not have
set fees they pay and the legit ones do not charge the producer
to distribute.

That's what I am thinking. But I am new to this and don't want to seem stupid. I guess he is just looking for pricing that will show the investors this is another way the film can make money. I just gotta figure how to show this on paper.

I'm still not understanding what you mean by "pricing". I'd
be glad to help, but I'm not sure what you're looking for.

If you are hoping distributors will have the amount they will
pay for a finished movie so you can put it in your business
plan; it doesn't work that way. They will pay anywhere from
nothing up front to several million up front. No way to know
what YOUR movie will be worth to anyone until it's finished.
If you want to know what similar movies have gotten you can
search for the fees paid for those specific movies. You will
need to do a lot of research and spend some money to join
professional websites, but those numbers are out there.

But they, too, are meaningless. Just because three movies
were bought by, say, Lionsgate, for $500,000 doesn't mean
they will buy yours for anywhere near that amount.

Don't worry about seeming stupid, very few people really
know how to put together a business plan for a movie project.
It is unlike any other business plan. So what, exactly, are you
looking for? A list of distributors?

Sorry for the lag in answering. But anyways, I am just looking for a number to show investors that the movie could make money this way by giving averages of what other movies have been sold for. Like for instance the producer I am working with had a movie that was bought by City Films where they distributed it on video. But I can see where it would only be specific to the movie and there is no way to get a real number. But that's how most business plans are anyways. Just a guess and numbers thrown up there in hopes that the investors will go for it. haha. I think we are working with investors who are not familiar with the movie industry too..which makes it interesting. So anyways, if anyone has any ideas of what I can put in the business plan that would show how movie sales get generated via box office, video, tv, etc. and if there is a way to sorta show this on paper..that would be awesome. And a list of distributors would be nice. So I can contact them and get their averages maybe. It's so much easier coming up with how much it will cost but trying to figure out how much it will make is impossible. And to try and show it on paper is tough. But if I can pull this off it would be super cool. Thanks for your input Instigator!
